Can a community truly thrive without leadership, or do we naturally need leaders and followers?

No it cannot. We need proper leadership, symbolism. People can't even choose what shoe to wear for the day, we need a leader to make much more important & dire decisions for us or proposing new ideas for us.

I think a community can thrive without leadership, provided that all members of the community agree on a shared set of norms and rules that govern their behavior.

I believe people will always need a leader because without an authority figure to point out the right from wrong and keep people in line chaos will ensue.
